Floodplain Mapping Information Systems (FMIS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are maps used for the purposes of addressing geographic issues and or risks facing a municipality or group of municipalities. Such geographic issues include the percentage chance that an area will flood, areas where traffic jams may occur and the degree to which they may occur, the impact a disaster may have on the infrastructure of a community. For prospective residents to an area, FMIS and GIS information may enlighten them about these risks and characteristics specific to their community and may assist in their making a well informed decision.
